Lunch and Learn

Tuesday, April 21, 2026
Location: La Fonda, 8633 Crown Hill Blvd, San Antonio, TX 78209 (Near Loop 410 and Broadway)
Speaker: Heath Bentley, M.A., R.P.A.
Topic: Archaeological Insights on Past Environments

Heath Bentley has been serving as the staff archaeologist for CPS Energy since 2018, where he reviews projects for impacts to cultural resources and coordinates with agencies on archaeological investigations. He began working on archaeological projects 20 years ago and has worked at Maya ceremonial centers and a British Colonial cemetery in Belize, a Roman port city in Portugal and various indigenous and colonial era projects throughout Texas, Oklahoma and other states of the Southeast. He earned both a BA and MA in Anthropology from Texas State University.
The presentation will cover how archaeologists use a variety of methods for reconstructing past environments, including the analysis of pollen, carbonized plant remains, animal bone, historic records and dendrochronology, among others. This provides an image of the how the environment of San Antonio has varied throughout the time humans have been here, from the mesic forests of the Pleistocene to fluctuating periods of semi-arid thorn scrub. The people of this region practiced various strategies for living, from hunting megafauna to baking plants in earth ovens. Moving down to Belize, we’ll discuss accounts of historic sea turtle populations and the documented impacts of large-scale harvesting for export. This was a major industry of the colonial economy, and it significantly reduced the turtle population, eventually making the commercial harvest unsustainable.

The Rapid Response Ecosystem is an integrated environmental services platform supporting environmental professionals, industrial facilities, and municipalities across Texas and beyond.
Our ecosystem combines field services, digital operational coordination, and a network of environmental experts to help organizations manage environmental work more effectively—from routine environmental projects to complex incidents.
The platform is built on three integrated entities:
Rapid Response Systems (RRS) – The Innovation Engine
RRS develops operational frameworks and digital coordination systems that support connected field teams, real-time situational awareness, and more efficient management of environmental operations and projects.
Rapid Response Environmental Services (RRES) – Field Operations
RRES provides environmental field services that support environmental consultants, engineers, facility EHS teams, and industry partners with the execution of environmental work, including:
· Environmental facility services and environmental maintenance
· Environmental remediation and project support
· Waste management and environmental infrastructure services
· Waterways, stormwater, and environmental system maintenance
· Environmental project coordination and field data support
· 24/7 environmental emergency response and incident management
Rapid Response Group (RRG) – The Force Multiplier
RRG is a cooperative network of environmental professionals and specialized service providers that expands capability and surge capacity when larger or more complex projects arise.
By combining field expertise, operational coordination, and digital capabilities, the Rapid Response
Ecosystem creates a modern approach to environmental operations—supporting organizations in their day-to-day environmental work while ensuring readiness for critical incidents when they occur.
